Lil Dicky, aka Dave Burd, is the internet sensation turned Professional Rapper, who made his name through viral YouTube videos and Kickstarter campaigns. Although L.D. may be no T.I., fighting his way through the trap game and growing up with the struggle, Lil Dicky has found a niche and is collecting on it. Dicky hasn’t gone without his own struggles to represent though, spitting lyrics on how life after college sucks, the issue of pre-gaming too hard, and even how his girl’s ex-boyfriend has a larger penis than him. Lil Dicky is changing the way rap has the ability to be interpreted, and I’m going to share with you 8 reasons why Lil Dicky is the new definition of a “Professional Rapper.”
1. Lil Dicky Doesn’t Want to Flaunt His Wealth, But Rather Criticize It
Rappers are notorious for flaunting the fact that they have money. Wearing 18 gold chains, diamond-plated teeth, and making hunneds rain on dem hoes, all while rapping about how they got money flowing from every orifice. This isn’t the case with Lil Dicky. Dave Burd, wants you to know that he ain’t got much money. This is a guy who initially got off the ground by spending his entire savings on making funny, yet amateur videos, in hope that he’d get large enough of an audience to pay to fund more. With his track, “$ave Dat Money” Lil Dicky, Fetty Wap, and Rich Homie Quan inform us how they are able to use their talents to save money, rather than spend it, and how stupid everyone else is for blowing money where it doesn’t need to be spent!

2. Lil Dicky Can Legitimately Spit Bars on Bars on Bars
He may rely heavily on his comedic abilities, but Lil Dicky is no joke. This guy can legitimately rap bars, and he does it with the utmost fluency and game, while remaining incredibly witty the whole way through. Lil Dicky has a few freestyle videos out there and he totally kills it, proving that his music videos aren’t the only reason he’s found the recognition he has. 3. Lil Dicky Isn’t Afraid to Tell It How It Is
To many raps nowadays are suger-coated with catchy lyric hooks and choruses, accompanied by pop-synths and Katy Perry-esque beats. That’s not what this music is about. Dicky gets real with his audience and points out what all of us are thinking, but too afraid to say. With his track, “Lemme Freak”, Dave calls out all the women who make “freaking” an obstacle for no apparent reason. After winning several rec league MVPs, offering up some pizza and a little bit of weed, and turning off The Departed for a movie ’bout a bee, what else do you want from us before we can freak?! Bravely so, Lil Dicky makes it that much easier for us to just stand up and say, “Goddammit, lemme freak.”

4. Lil Dicky Recognizes That The Lion King is the Most Gangster Movie in Existence
This one is pretty self-explanatory. We know we are all tired of rappers singing about being Scarface or The Godfather. Nah. No you’re not. You might be snorting mounds of coke and and ordering around your minions, but come on, these guys aren’t role models. Now Simba on the other hand, he’s someone to look to as an idol, and Lil Dicky sees this with as clear of eyes as any. Simba is not only a great role model, but he’s Gangster AF. As Dicky demonstrates in his rap about the Lion King, even though Simba made the fatal mistake of disturbing the peace in the gorge, Scar be “fucking with the god now.”

5. Lil Dicky Achieved Fame By Getting Vulnerable
Jealousy is something that plagues us all at one point or another. Often times rappers put on their steel body armor and pretend like nothing can touch them. Not Lil Dicky though. With his first video “Ex-Boyfriend”, the one that went viral in less than 24 hours and put Lil Dicky on the map, is a video that chronicles the anxiety he experiences when around his girlfriend’s ex. Rapping about how he’s fine as hell, how he pictures them doing the deed looking so much better than he would, and how there’s a good chance the ex’s penis has a six pack. Lil Dicky’s anxiety gets the best of him, but we really appreciate the honesty, something which other rappers hide behind their hefty barricades of ego.

6. Lil Dicky Respects the Fact That We Might Not Make It to His Show Despite Having Bought A Ticket
We’ve all pregamed. We’ve all pregamed too hard. We’ve all had that experience where the pregame becomes the game. We’ve all fell asleep before leaving the house once or twice. Lil Dicky wants to us to know that he respects the nature of the pregame, and that he’s been in our shoes. With his track “Classic Male Pregame”, we are reminded of how a night destined to be great can easily turn into a night of getting too stoned, playing guitar hero, and throwing up while taking a shit. If you don’t make it to the show despite having purchased your ticket, don’t worry Lil D will understand… but it doesn’t mean you get a refund.

7. Lil Dicky Has A Plan For Total Rap Domination
Lil Dicky has a full on plan for his rap career. He wants to hit the niche that rap is missing right now. He’s not trying to get in fights in clubs to show his alpha side, he’s not into designing his songs around a set formula, he’s not trying to rap about the trap or drug problems (getting stoned non-inclusive). Lil Dicky lays it all out in his track “Professional Rapper” in which he interviews for a position with Snoop Dogg. The video says it all, and if you think you’re missing something, L.D. has even said that he explains it at his live performances as well with a PowerPoint presentation.

8. Just Like Any “Professional”, Lil Dicky Has A Fallback Plan
You are always going to want to be the best at what you do, and with Lil Dicky it is no different. Dave Burd wants to be at the top of the rap game, but as he says himself, no one will ever look at him like they look at Jay-Z. He wants to be a new creation. He wants to be the Buffalo Chicken pizza of the rap game. If all else fails, and his comedy-rap act fades away into pop culture history, Dave has a fallback plan, and this rap career is certainly only going to help him in this alternate path. Check out the video below to see that Lil Dicky’s got his path figured out!

Lil Dicky is the new definition of “Professional Rapper”. He’s honest, he can spit, he’s not about ego, he’s financially responsible, he has a game plan, he understands that not everything always works out, and he appreciates the gangster within Simba. What else could you want from a guy who just wants to make you laugh and provide you with his art.
