YetepFunky electronic music encompasses a wide array of styles, each offering a unique flavor of funk. In this piece, I aim to delve into two distinct characterizations within the realm of EDM funk, hoping to introduce you to some new and exciting tracks. As a fervent funk enthusiast (GRiZ holds the top spot in my favorites), I’m continually amazed by artists’ ability to craft music that undeniably makes your body move. While the genre has its technical names that I wont be using, I’ll be breaking down two primary categories: Bass Funk, characterized by bass-heavy notes and creative sound design, and Funk Jam, relying on the standard funky style tempo and beats.
“Hot Guy Alert” by The Floozies, The Sponges – Funk Jam
The inaugural example of Funk Jam comes from a collaboration between The Floozies and The Sponges, both exemplifying the essence of classic funk. The simplicity and classic nature of the sound design in this track believably induce a groove. The song’s foundation is a straightforward funky rhythm, accentuated by impeccable accents that amplify its overall grooviness. Themed around spotting a “hot guy,” it’s undeniably a fresh and lively tune.
“Funkonaut” by GRiZ, LSDREAM – Bass Funk
Turning to the realm of Bass Funk, GRiZ and LSDREAM offer a stellar example. This track showcases remarkable creativity in sound design, placing a strong emphasis on classic bass and space bass elements. While still funk, it diverges from the classic funk style seen in the previous example, opting for heavy downbeats and a playful rhythm to captivate listeners. An absolute banger, this track is a must-listen for those attuned to the genre.
“Let It Slide” by INZO, Blookah, Leo Napier – Funk Jam
Despite its incredible sound design (a signature of Inzo), “Let It Slide” serves as a prime illustration of Funk Jam. In the drop, amidst the future trap sounds, the drums and rhythm lean towards the “classic” funk style, albeit with a touch of ambiguity in definitions. This track relies on its beat to steer the groove, featuring fantastic future trap accents. If you’re a fan of artists like Inzo and Louis the Child, this piece is tailor-made for you.
“I Know the Truth” by Pretty Lights – Bass Funk
Pretty Lights makes a triumphant return, gracing festivals and venues nationwide. A stalwart in the funk scene, “I Know the Truth” exemplifies Bass Funk, prioritizing impeccable sound design. The drop deviates from classical funk, opting for a slightly slower pace with emphasis on sound design progression, lending dimension to the funky vibes. Despite its age, this track is a timeless recommendation.
“Gold” by GRiZ, Cherub – Funk Jam
While GRiZ is predominantly associated with Bass Funk, “Gold” stands out as a classic funk piece fitting snugly into the Funk Jam category. A collaboration with Cherub, this track oozes funkiness, relying on rhythm rather than sound design progression to set the groove. With a captivating blend of sound design and rhythm, “Gold” has earned its spot on my repeat playlist since its release.
“Summer Luv” by Whethan, The Knocks, Crystal Fighters – Bass Funk
A recent discovery, “Summer Luv” emerges as a certified banger. Combining superb sound design with an infectious rhythm, this track strikes a harmonious balance. While not strictly a “bass” song, it leverages sound progression and rhythm to introduce grooviness, excelling in both aspects. If you haven’t given this song a listen yet, it’s definitely worth checking out!
