How Oliver Heldens Discovered His Passion Through Fruity Loops

Over the past few years, Oliver Heldens has seemingly come out of no where jumping to the top as one of the hottest EDM artists in the business. Heldens has done a marvelous job of bringing mainstream attention to the future house genre, and has gained millions of fans through his goofy sense of humor and signature dance moves. In a recent interview with Insomniac, his mom/financial advisor, Elaine Schaap, shared a classic home video of Oliver dancing as a kid giving fans an idea of how he got started.

All thanks to Fruity Loops, the music making software not the cereal, for steering Oliver in the right direction when he was just 12 years old. When talking about her favorite childhood memories of Oliver, his mom describes how him and his brother created their own video of themselves dancing to a track created on a demo version of Fruity Loops. “One of my favorite is him jump-style dancing with his brother Lars when they were 12 and 10 years old, on a French village square. In the Netherlands, he and the boys next door made a video of them jump-style dancing, and they used a demo FL to make the music. It was then that Oliver’s interest in making music started.”, she says. Schaap explains that after he discovered FL Studio, music was all that mattered to him. She says that Oliver put lots of focus into things he was interested in like playing chess and making music, but not into his schoolwork. Creating music was what relaxed him opposed to sight seeing and spending time with family, and I think I speak for many when I say that olivers hobby of choice did him well in the long run.
