Relentless Beats

RB Exclusive Interview: MC4D

Nobody’s doing it quite like MC4D. This twin brother DJ/producer duo is best known for their signature country-dance crossover sound, resulting in an insanely fun, one-of-a-kind product. The brothers have gained an avid following since their inception a few years back and show no signs of slowing down soon.

Their successful EDM Down Under Mix series (top-charting on SoundCloud U.S. dance charts) and popular country remixes of artists like Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan have received over 10M+ streams in the last year, as well as tens of millions of views on Tiktok/Instagram. Bridging the gap between EDM and country fans, MC4D has landed multiple college tours, high profile club performances, and four nights closing the Hard Rock Stage at the 2023 CMA Fest. They’ve also released over two dozen official remixes for major artists like Two Friends, Frank Walker, Wrabel, Kesha, NEIKED, and Waterparks, amassing 25M+ streams.

MC4D is establishing themselves as a pioneer for this new country-folk-EDM genre, and with an upcoming EP, high-profile remixes, and festival performances in 2024, MC4D is carving out a niche that fans can’t find anywhere else. We had the chance to speak with MC4D ahead of their upcoming stop at Darkstar tomorrow, March 22nd. Check it out below!

When and how did you get your start in music?

We’re twin brothers, and around the same growing up began playing the piano. We started getting into writing our own songs on the piano, and when our family got a macbook and we started messing around with garageband and fell in love with producing. Throughout high school and college we got more and more serious about the project, forming MC4D our sophomore year of college and putting out our first dance remixes.

What’s the inspiration or meaning behind your name?

We messed around with a ton of name ideas, and eventually MC4D was what we found stuck / was catchiest with the people around us. The M and C is for Matt and Chris, and the 4D is an homage to a roots- a bunch of things in our background that shaped us and happen to all start with the letter D.

MC4D is known for mixing EDM and country, what inspired you to mix the genres?

We got really into country music and dance music around the same time in high school, so it was always in the back of minds to do a crossover. During COVID we were pretty much at home all day thinking of new ideas to work on, and starting a country x dance crossover mix kept coming up since nobody was doing it. We decided to put out the first Down Under Country mix not knowing if it would catch on with country or dance fans, and luckily it just kept slowly building over time to what it’s grown into today.

You remixed a Steve Aoki song recently. What was that process like?

Steve reached out to us on instagram to do the remix of his song ‘Us’ with Ernest, which was super cool to see a legend like him recognize our project and sound. From there it was a pretty smooth process honestly- we sent over a draft, made a couple quick edits based on feedback, and then the song was good to go and be released in about a week.

You had over 20 tour dates last year. What’s it like being on tour? Any memorable moments you want to share?

It’s certainly exhausting but so much  fun- we’ve gotten to see so many new cities and places around the U.S. and meet tons of amazing people who have connected with our music. A couple moments that stand out were playing 3 nights at CMA fest last year and opening for Two Friends for over 5,000 people in Nashville.

What’s the best part about being a musician?

Probably having the freedom to create every day- there’s nothing we love more than writing songs along with the amazingly talented singers and songwriters we’re working with and to push the boundaries of our creativity. We’re so excited to share the whole new project we’ve been building out.

What’s the hardest part about being a musician?

Probably balancing our time and finding down time to relax. Between a busy tour schedule, creating new original songs and remixes, posting regularly on social media, and doing promo, it all adds up very quickly. It’s important to us to find time to be with our friends / family in-between when we’re on the road.

What’s something that nobody knows about you guys?

Hmm that’s a tough one- one thing is that growing up, we only ever spent 1 night of our lives not sleeping in the same house until we graduated high school. We’ve always been super close, but also going to different schools for college and branching out was something that helped each of us a lot.

What are you most excited about in 2024?

We’re SUPER excited to share the dozens of new remixes and songs that we’ve been working on for the past year plus. We think they’re a very unique blend of EDM, folk, and dance music that nobody has been making, and we can’t wait to see what people think.

Don’t miss MC4D at Darkstar TOMORROW, March 22nd. Grab tickets here while they last.
